Coaching. Not Therapy.

Hi – I’m Dr. Alaina Johnson. At Parenting Talent LLC I am a coach, author and consultant. I am committed to partnering with you to address the steps you need to reach your goals.

Coaching and therapy are different with separate expectations, limitations and goals.

Through Parenting Talent LLC I work with parents of tweens and teens interested in the creative arts, young adults and older teens pursinging creative arts in a professional capacity, and studio owners, agencies, agents, managers, mentors, teachers and instructors who work with this population.

Coaching and psychotherapy may be complimentary services that work hand in hand to lead to meaningful, impactful, sustainable change across various areas in life. I cannot, however, provide you with both services. Once you have engaged with me for one type of service, you will no longer be eligible to switch to the other one now or in the future. This is to maintain healthy boundaries for all involved. Once you engage with me via Parenting Talent LLC our relationship is limited to coaching or consulting services.

Coaching VS. Psychotherapy

  1. Psychotherapy can use its diagnoses to treat clinical disorders. Coaching makes no claims of efficacy in treating clinical disorders.
  2. Psychotherapy is often reimbursable by health insurance since diagnosis and treatment is recognized as being part of health care. Coaching is not reimbursable since it does not involve diagnosis or treatment.
  3. Goals in psychotherapy may be set by the therapist after diagnosis. Goals in coaching are typically self-identified by the client.
  4. Psychotherapy goals typically involve treatment of a mental health concern that is diagnosed by a therapist. Coaching goals typically focus on quality of life and no diagnosis is involved.
  5. Psychotherapy typically involves recognized power differentials between client and therapist. This vulnerability of clients gives psychotherapists legal and ethical responsibilities. Coaching is in the nature of a supportive peer-to-peer relationship, with the results evaluated by the client.
  6. Psychotherapy may be provided by primary caregivers such as hospitals and may be considered an aspect of primary care. Coaching is not associated with primary care.
  7. Coaches are required to refer clients to psychotherapists or psychiatrists if the client’s problem is outside their scope of practice.

Though my coaching may be enhanced by my clinical knowledge, coaching is not, and is not intended to replace therapy. If during the course of our coaching relationship I feel you would benefit from clinical intervention, I will recommend pursuing this in conjunction with or in lieu of coaching with an outside practitioner. If I feel that a clinical concern may be impacting the efficacy of your ability to benefit from or utilize coaching, I may terminate coaching sessions and provide you with an appropriate referral for clinical treatment

Even on our best days, life is a constant ebb and flow of positive and challenging, ups and downs, successes and misses. My goal is to support you as you navigate through with a sense of direction, purpose, plan, accountability and flexibility – with a dash of humor thrown in.

Payment Policy:

Coaching session fees are due before the time of service. Coaching is not psychotherapy nor diagnostic, therefore is ineligible for insurance reimbursement.

I reserve the right to cancel if payment has not been received prior to the start time. If cancellation due to non-payment is a repeat concern, coaching services may be terminated.

If cancellation is required after payment has been received, the appointment will be rescheduled. If this occurs more than three times in a calendar year, a cancellation fee of 50% of the service charge will be enforced.

You will be asked to sign a form in your intake documents indicating that you understand the differences between coaching and therapy and your understanding that we are not engaged in a therapeutic relationship as well as one indicating you are aware of these policies and agree to meet your financial obligations.
