You want to be the most powerful – and effective influence in your teen’s life.

Knowing exactly what to say matters.

Knowing

exactly what

to say

matters.

I will never forget talking to my son when I was 800 miles away as I heard his voice break.

An audition he wanted to nail – and had turned down opportunities for in the hopes it would all work out – had gone poorly.

Performance anxiety had gotten the best of him, he’d made several mistakes that he’d never made when rehearsing – and the outcome was not looking good.

He was devastated.

As I sat there desperately looking for the right words, I listened as he was beating himself up.

And questioning if he should even go on with the activity he loved.

Interspersed with listening I tried to offer comfort. until he said “I’m just gonna go mom. Talking about it is just making it worse.”

Ouch.

I’m a therapist – trained in saying the right thing to maintain connection and provide hope.

This was one of the moments that eventually led me to pull together my training in adolescent psychology, current research, information from other parents and my own experience as a mom and put it all together.

This is the exact strategy I developed for my own teens, and now countless others I have counseled and coached, on how to know the right words to guide teens towards hope and resilience.

To connect with when they are struggling to manage disappointment, failure and mistakes.

And to lift them up towards future success.

When it comes to your teen – talk ISN’T cheap.

“Being able to offer comfort in my daughters language is a game changer.” –  Tessa M.

But sometimes…

your well-intentioned words leave your teen feeling misunderstood or frustrated.

This leads to them shutting down and pulling away instead leaning on you and deeper connection.

When you aren’t sure what to say, you stay silent. Leaving your teen

frustrated, sad or questioning their abilities

Or you jump in to attempt to provide comfort and instead unintentionally make it worse, missing the mark.
